The study region of SpreeWasser:N is the catchment area of the Lower Spree in Brandenburg

The Lower Spree pilot region is located east and southeast between the Spreewald and Berlin, mainly in the state of Brandenburg.

There are large areas of surface water in the area. Nevertheless, due to climatic conditions, there is always a lack of usable freshwater in the region.

The water network of the Spree River has been heavily anthropogenically altered over time. Reasons for this are:

  • Agricultural activity
  • cultural transformation of the landscape
  • connection of inland catchment areas
  • relocation or draining of streams , also in the course of coal extraction
